MARK ZUCKERBERG'S PERSONAL WEALTH WENT DOWN AS HE LOST NEARLY USD 7 BILLION IN YESTERDAY’S OUTAGE~WHAT WENT WRONG?

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp getting back to normal after about six-hour outage that left many wondering what might have gone wrong forcing some to re-install the Applications only to find out that something is not adding up. With some taking it to twitter the only platform that is commonly used that was up and running to find out what was happening.

Facebook wrote on Twitter “To the huge community of people and businesses around the world who depend on us: we're sorry. We’ve been working hard to restore access to our apps and services and are happy to report they are coming back online now. Thank you for bearing with us.” Twitter is a rival platform.

Outage tracking website Downdetector.com said it had received 10.6 million reports of problems ranging from the United States and Europe to Colombia and Singapore, with trouble first appearing at about 15:45 GMT./ 18:45 Kenyan time. The largest outage ever seen.

This morning, WhatsApp head William Cathcart announce on twitter announced that the service was “back up and running” but did not elaborate on what might have caused the problems.

“We know that people were unable to use @WhatsApp to connect with their friends, family, businesses, community groups, and more today a humbling reminder of how much people and organizations rely on our app every day,”

“Our engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted this communication,” Facebook later wrote.

It is reported that the outage was Longer than one experienced in 2019   that was caused by technical problems.

More than 50,000 incidents of people reported issues with Facebook and Instagram. This according to Downdetector, which only tracks outages by collating status reports from a series of sources, including user-submitted errors on its platform.

“My bet is that someone pushed a button wrong, or a cord got unplugged, which seems very minor but the reality is that we’ve seen these things before where suddenly something is configured incorrectly and entire swaths of the internet are not available,” Sherr said.

The outage came with Facebook under pressure in the US, after a leaked internal investigation showed the social media giant was aware of how its Instagram app harmed the mental health of teenagers.

In a series of articles, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) newspaper reported that Facebook knew its Instagram platform caused some teenagers, particularly girls, to feel bad about their self-image. The company has rejected the reports as a distortion of the investigation’s findings.

“We care deeply about the safety and security of the people on our platform,” Facebook’s Head of Global Security, Antigone Davis, said during a Senate subcommittee hearing last week. “We have put in place multiple protections to create safe and age-appropriate experiences for people between the ages of 13 and 17.”

Senator Richard Blumenthal, chair of the subcommittee, said the testimony is “critical to understanding what Facebook knew about its platforms’ toxic effects on young users, when they knew it, and what they did about it”.

Last week, Instagram said it was pausing plans to launch a platform for children, saying the move aimed to give the company “time to work with parents, experts, policymaker SERVICE and regulators, to listen to their concerns, and to demonstrate the value and importance of this project for younger teens online today”.

The outage has only affirmed how useful Technology has become for people and business around the globe.
